Frequently asked questions
About LeasePlan Bank
-
Why did LeasePlan Bank stop accepting new clients last year?
Since we opened our doors, we have always stated that our goal was to remain a small bank. In August 2010, the bank had almost reached its internal target for that year, so we made the deliberate decision to take a break from accepting new clients. This is in accordance with our commitment to maintain a balanced funding base for our business.

Who is LeasePlan Bank?
LeasePlan Bank is a 100% Dutch internet savings bank and a subsidiary of the Dutch public company LeasePlan Corporation N.V., with activities worldwide.
Because LeasePlan Bank stands for an honest, transparent and customer-friendly approach, we offer comprehensible products with clear conditions. We always strive to offer you a high interest rate. Maybe not always the highest on the market, but the most transparent. Our interest rate is linked to Euribor®, the interest rate European banks charges each other, and is monthly adjusted. That way you know you always get a good interest.
-
Who is LeasePlan Corporation N.V.?
LeasePlan Corporation N.V. is a Dutch bank that offers financial services in the form of providing and managing business assets, primarily cars, to the business market. As market leader, we set ourselves apart from the competition with our vast international network of subsidiaries in 30 countries and with the knowledge and expertise we have accrued in our 45 years of experience.
LeasePlan Corporation N.V. is known as the founder and driver of today's car leasing industry, and on the basis of that position, is an active player on the national and international financial markets. LeasePlan Corporation N.V. has held a banking licence since 1993, and is under the supervision of De Nederlandsche Bank.
-
Does LeasePlan Corporation N.V. rely on any state support?
In October 2008, the Dutch government created a guarantee system for the banking sector, to promote the resumption of interbank lending. This guarantee is available to all healthy banks, including LeasePlan Corporation N.V. In December 2008, LeasePlan Corporation N.V. was the first Dutch bank to issue state-backed bonds under this guarantee, and this was soon followed by a number of additional issues. LeasePlan Corporation N.V. resumed issuing bonds without the backing of the state guarantee since October 2009.
-
Why do I get a high interest rate with LeasePlan Bank?
Because LeasePlan Bank is an internet savings bank, its costs are much lower than those of standard banks. Compared to other banks, our costs for accommodations, correspondence, etc., are considerably lower, and we pass these savings on to you in the form of a higher interest rate. Maybe not always the hightes interest rate, but the most transparent.

What does the deposit guarantee scheme mean?
The deposit guarantee scheme was created to protect savers against the risk of bankruptcy of the savings bank. This guarantee scheme applies to banks established in the Netherlands and operating under a licence issued by De Nederlandsche Bank. The scheme guarantees until 31-12-2010 that account balances in the Netherlands up to € 100,000 will be repaid in the event that the bank with which the money is deposited fails. The maximum amount applies per person per banking institution, regardless of the number of accounts.
-
Who are covered by the deposit guarantee scheme?
As a part of LeasePlan Corporation N.V., LeasePlan Bank is covered by De Nederlandsche Bank's deposit guarantee scheme.
Private people and small enterprises (specifically: enterprises allowed to publish a summary balance sheet) are eligible for compensation under the DGS. A small group of private people are excluded from compensation under the DGS: directors of the bank in difficulties, persons holding a 5% or larger stake in that bank and close relations of such persons. Certain categories of enterprises are also excluded, such as financial undertakings and government bodies. (source: De Nederlandsche Bank)
This means that your business internet savings account and any term deposits with LeasePlan Bank are covered.
Legal entities who are entitled to submit a summary balance sheet (and who are therefore entitled to make a claim under the deposit guarantee scheme) must meet at least two of the following three requirements:
- a balance sheet total of € 4.4 million or less

General interest rate information
-
How is the interest rate calculated?
LeasePlan Bank applies two types of interest: variable interest and fixed interest. The variable interest is applicable to the internet savings account. The interest rate can go up or down. The fixed interest rate applies to term deposits. With a term deposit, the interest rate stays the same during the period agreed with you. This period is called the term. You cannot withdraw your money during this period. You can only do this at the end of the term. There are exceptions. You can read about these in our product terms and conditions. You can read more about the variable interest and fixed interest below.
Variable interest internet savings account
LeasePlan Bank uses a fair and transparent method for determining the variable interest from the internet savings account. We set the variable interest rate on the basis of the 1-month Euribor®. This is an important interest rate on the money market. If the 1-month Euribor® increases, your savings interest rate goes up. If the 1-month Euribor® decreases, your savings interest rate goes down. Moreover, you receive a fixed spread from us over and above the Euribor interest rate. In other words, the level of your variable savings interest rate is determined by the 1-month Euribor® plus this fixed spread. We set the spread each quarter. You can find the level of the spread on our page with interest information. LeasePlan Bank informs you about the interest rate via the website and via e-mail each month.Fixed interest term deposit
We determine the fixed interest rate using a different method to that for the variable interest rate. We determine the fixed interest rate on the basis of the costs of money on the money market and on the basis of the capital requirements of LeasePlan Corporation N.V. We use the fixed interest rate for term deposits. The fixed interest rate of a term deposit is fixed for the duration of the term deposit. -
What is Euribor®?
Euribor® is short for Euro Interbank Offered Rate. The Euribor rates are based on the interest rates at which a panel of 57 European banks borrow funds from one another. Euribor® is a registered trademark of Euribor-EBF a.i.s.b.l.
-
What interest rate percentages does LeasePlan Bank use?
You can find our current interest rates on our homepage. These percentages are also available alongside the information on internet savings accounts and alongside the information on our term deposits. Would you like to know how we set the interest rate? Go to our page with interest information or read the answer to the question ‘How is the interest rate determined?’
-
When is the interest on my internet savings account paid?
Interest on an internet savings account is paid on the first day of the new month.
-
When is the interest on my term deposit paid?
The interest on term deposits of a year or shorter is transferred to your internet savings account at the end of the term. The interest on term deposits with terms of over one year is paid at the end of each calendar year and at the end of the term.
-
The return the savings calculator shows me is different than what if calculated my self. How is the possible?
The difference you see can be caused by two reasons. First, the savings calculator has a year of 360 days in stead of 365 (or 366). So in reality you receive interest on more days. Second, the savings calculator makes use of the concept of interest-on-interest. Therefore in the calculation you’ll receive interest on the interest that is paid to you. In real life you may want to withdraw the interest each month and therefore won’t receive interest on that money.

Is online saving safe?
To be sure that you and only you can access your savings, LeasePlan Bank devotes a great deal of attention to verifying your identity. Upon applying to open the account, you (the business owner or representative of the legal entity) must provide your citizen service number (tax and national social insurance number) and Chamber of Commerce registration number. The first deposit can only be made from your linked account (a Dutch bank/giro account). And from your savings account, you can only transfer funds to your linked account.
There are several additional precautions that you can take yourself:
- Make sure that your computer is virus-free. Install a virus scanner and firewall, and make sure to download the latest updates for them regularly. Only download and install software from senders you know and trust.
- Check that the page is secure (the padlock on your browser window) and verify the website's certificate.
- Ensure that the web address begins with ‘https’. The ‘s’ in ‘https’ stands for ‘secure,’ and shows that you are in the LeasePlan Bank secure environment.
- Make sure that only you know your password; do not give it to anyone else. Employees of LeasePlan Bank will never ask you for your password.
- If you ever log in from a public computer, always make sure you log out after your session.
- Never open e-mail attachments unless you are sure what the content of the attachment is. If the sender of the e-mail is known to you but you are not sure about the attachment, you are best advised to not open the attachment. Criminals are known to use the names of other people in sending e-mails that contain viruses.
